Graduation Day

Wednesday, June 17, marked an exciting day for our family. Emily graduated from Seneca High School. I think she was very ready to be done with school. She didn't have to stay long that last day...just a quick practice and then it was off to get some food with her friends at the diner.

The weather forecast originally called for rain about midnight so we thought we would dodge the bullet. But no such luck. The rain started at about 4 and went right up until the time to start the outdoor ceremony. Then is cleared off just enough to get the graduation in and started right up again. They had to cut out the presenting of awards and scholarships part of the evening, but that was not a huge thing because all of the info was printed in the program. It just made the event a little shorter.

After the graduation we went as a family to the diner (yes, that was two trips in one day for Emily) for a quick dinner and then Emily and her friends went to the planned grad bash for the seniors. Despite the rain, it turned out to be a really great day. Congrats, Em!!

Garden Update

Last year Steve decided that it was time to try a garden again. We had tried it multiple times years ago when we first moved into the house here on Plymouth Ct. but always had problems with the deer eating our plants. After a lot of frustration, we finally gave up and only planted the occasional tomato plant. Last year we (and four kind missionaries serving in our area) brought in top soil and built a garden spot close to our house. We learned some things in our planting last year and had some successes.
This year we have tried it again with some new experiments. It has been a very wet spring which has helped our plants grow very tall. They look great but now we just hope that they will actually produce some vegetables for us. We have eaten a few things from it already like collard greens, peas(well, a few) and some green onions which actually came back from last year when we thought they had been a failure. Who knew? We are also trying some potted tomatoes which we have put inside our pool fence. We cheated a little with these because we bought plants that were quite mature and then re-potted them in a bigger container. Where the tomatoes in our garden are just flowering, the potted ones are loaded with little tomatoes. It will be fun to see how they do. Hopefully we will have tomatoes coming on at different times and will always be able to have a nice ripe one available.
Evan is especially excited about the garden and checks on it religiously. He can even look down on it from his bedroom window.
If there is a new flower or a bee buzzing around, Evan will find it. If things ever need watering, Evan is on the job. It has been fun to watch his enthusiasm. So far, so good....we are hoping for some new successes and are sure we will learn a lot in the process.

A Great Day

Sunday was just one of those days where there were many reasons to celebrate. First of all, it was Nathan's birthday. He was born on Flag Day twelve years ago. We had fun taking him out to dinner and to a movie with two of his friends the night before. (Side note...."UP" is a really fun movie!) Then on Sunday, he got to speak in church and was also ordained to the office of a deacon in the Aaronic Priesthood. He has been looking forward to the day for a long time. We are so proud of him and look forward to going with him to the Manhattan temple this next Saturday to participate in baptisms for the dead.
Grandma Foulk made a delicious birthday dinner for Nate that afternoon and then we had the traditional Carvel ice cream cake.

That night we were able to attend our stake seminary graduation to see Emily graduate. The graduation represents four years of attending early morning scripture instruction/study. It is a sacrifice for all those who attend, but the blessings are evident. The graduation was the perfect ending to a wonderful day.
